An Unexpected Incident
On July 22, 1966, an improbable event occurred at RAF Lyneham. Walter "Taffy" Holden, a 39-year-old engineer, took the controls of an English Electric Lightning F.1, a supersonic fighter aircraft, and inadvertently took off. This unplanned flight began during a simple ground test. Holden, with limited experience in small training aircraft, accidentally engaged the afterburner, a mechanism designed to boost the fighter's speed to Mach 2.0.
The Aircraft Involved
The Lightning F.1 was a high-performance interceptor aircraft, designed to achieve supersonic speeds with a maximum takeoff weight of 20 tons. The model involved in the incident was the XM135, the second production Lightning. An electrical fault in this aircraft made it even more unpredictable, as it only manifested during takeoff acceleration.
The Unintended Flight
Holden, without a helmet or canopy, with a disabled ejection seat and locked landing gear, had to maneuver the aircraft under precarious conditions. After narrowly avoiding a fuel bowser and another aircraft, he managed to take off. The first two landing attempts failed, but he eventually managed to land the aircraft using a technique inspired by taildragger aircraft.
The Aftermath
Despite the rough landing, the aircraft was returned to service and became a major exhibit at the Duxford aviation museum. This incident underscores the crucial importance of safety and training in military aviation.
