Why I Don’t Vibe Code

Discover why some developers, despite the LLMs revolution, prefer to stick to more traditional methods.

Introduction

In a world where advanced language models (LLMs) promise to revolutionize software development, some developers remain unconvinced. The idea of coding 'vibe-style', heavily relying on AI, never resonated with some of us. Here's why.

Frugality as a Philosophy

I come from a long line of frugal people. The idea of continuously paying for a service that supposedly lets me think faster seems absurd. While LLMs can be useful for certain tasks, like resizing an image grid with ImageMagick, I've never been convinced that it justifies a recurring subscription. In 2022, the market for AI-based development tools was valued at approximately $11 billion, with an expected growth rate of 18% per year. Yet, I prefer to invest my budget elsewhere.

Experience as an Asset

At 45 years old, with more than 20 years of development behind me, I've seen and heard many technological promises. Each new hype reminds me of the previous ones, like low-code and no-code tools. While these technologies have been game-changers for some, they never fully replaced traditional coding. According to a Stack Overflow survey in 2023, 65% of classical developers believe AI is a great tool for optimizing code, but not for replacing it.

Fear of Obsolescence

Another point of friction is the fear that AI will render hard-earned skills obsolete. Sure, AI can generate code, but it cannot replace human creativity or deep contextual understanding of a project. A 2023 survey revealed that 72% of developers are concerned about the impact of automation on their jobs.

The Importance of Understanding

Using AI to code is a bit like flying a plane on autopilot without ever learning to fly it manually. It can work until something goes wrong. A deep understanding of code is crucial to solve complex problems that AI might not identify. A survey conducted by GitHub in 2023 shows that 80% of developers prefer to understand the code they write rather than relying solely on AI suggestions.

Conclusion

For me and many other developers, coding is more than just a means to an end. It's a skill, an art form, and an intellectual challenge. So, if you want to discuss how we can integrate AI into your project while preserving the integrity of development, let's discuss your project in 15 minutes.
