An Unexpected Innovation in Cancer Treatment
Bioengineering continues to surprise us with innovative solutions to health problems. The latest breakthrough comes from the University of Pennsylvania, where a team of researchers led by Henry Daniell has developed a bioengineered chewing gum capable of reducing HPV levels and other microbes associated with head and neck cancers.
Why Target HPV and Harmful Oral Bacteria?
Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is a common and aggressive form of cancer, often discovered at an advanced stage. Current treatments do not significantly improve patients' quality of life or five-year survival rates, highlighting the need for new therapeutic approaches. HPV is a major player in the global increase in oropharyngeal cancers. Additionally, two bacteria, Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg) and Fusobacterium nucleatum (Fn), worsen the prognosis of untreated oral cancers.
The Role of Bioengineered Chewing Gum
This gum utilizes lablab bean extracts containing the naturally occurring antiviral protein FRIL. In tests with oral samples from HNSCC patients, this gum significantly reduced levels of HPV and the bacteria Pg and Fn. The results showed a 93% reduction in HPV levels in saliva samples and an 80% reduction in oral rinse samples.
A Promising Future for Accessible Treatments
The results of this study, published in Scientific Reports, pave the way for more accessible and affordable treatments. By preserving beneficial mouth bacteria, this bioengineered gum offers a potentially safer solution than current treatments.
