I Built Timeframe, Our Family E-Paper Dashboard

Discover how Joel Hawksley transformed e-paper technology to create a functional and stylish family dashboard.

Introduction: The Birth of Timeframe

In a world where screens are ubiquitous, Joel Hawksley set out to create a solution that combines technology with family life without sacrificing the visual comfort of his home. The result? Timeframe, an innovative e-paper dashboard integrating weather, calendar, and smart home data.

The Initial Challenge

The idea for Timeframe was born out of a personal need. Joel and his wife Caitlin wanted a home where technology served their needs without invading their space. Their goal: to keep their bedroom screen-free while having access to essential information like the calendar and weather.

Early Attempts: From Magic Mirrors to Kindles

Joel's first prototype was a 'Magic Mirror', a mirror with an integrated LCD screen. Although promising, it suffered from readability and glare issues. Next, Joel experimented with jailbroken Kindles, but their slow refresh rate and constant tinkering required a more robust solution.

The Emergence of the E-Paper Solution

Joel eventually discovered Visionect's e-paper displays, available in various sizes and capable of running for months on a single charge. These screens offer high contrast and are readable even in bright light.

Seamless Integration

To operate these screens, Joel opted for a local installation on a Raspberry Pi, using Ruby on Rails to handle the data. The generated images were pushed to the screens every five minutes, ensuring frequent updates without visual disruption.

Impact and Benefits of the Family Dashboard

Timeframe is not just a technical solution; it is a tangible enhancement to daily life. Strategically placed screens around the house provide important information without the distractions of traditional devices.

A Model for Home Innovation

Timeframe demonstrates how a pragmatic and experimental approach can lead to significant innovations in domestic life. It highlights the importance of open-source solutions and accessible technology for all.

Conclusion: Family Technology Within Reach

Timeframe is a perfect example of how technology can be intelligently used to improve daily life. By integrating available tools and innovating where necessary, Joel Hawksley has created a dashboard that meets his family needs while remaining simple and effective.
