In 2019, a first version of this clock was created, but the need for more detailed documentation and a more aesthetic design led to a revised version.

Designing the Clock

The first step in creating this clock is digital design. By using a 3D design software like Rhino3D, you can experiment with different configurations and aesthetics. For our clock, we chose to use three 90° panel voltmeters available on Amazon for about $9 each. These voltmeters were disassembled to allow for more customized modifications.

Customizing the Voltmeters

Customization begins with creating new dials. The original dials are replaced with decals printed on adhesive paper. Printable PDF templates are available to facilitate this step. It is crucial to note that the hour dial has 13 divisions, from 0 to 12, while the minute and second dials have 61, from 00 to 60. This setup allows continuous motion of the hands, offering visual precision.

Fabricating the Wooden Case

For an enhanced aesthetic, the case is made of maple wood. The fabrication of the front and back faces is done using a CNC mill for optimal precision. However, the curvature of the side walls requires a different approach. By using an internal notching technique, the wood is made flexible enough to bend without breaking.

Final Assembly

After bending the side walls and allowing them to dry, they are glued to the front and back faces. An external plywood template ensures a precise fit. Finally, the whole assembly is sanded and coated with a nitrocellulose lacquer for a smooth, professional finish.

Electronic Components

The electronic aspect of this clock is relatively simple. An AVR128DB28 microcontroller is used, powered by a wall adapter. The voltmeters are connected to this microcontroller, which is calibrated to control the movement of the hands.
