Despite my twenty years in technology and my background in information security, Amazon kept preventing me from fully using my tablet. So, I decided to take matters into my own hands and spend $266 on four AI models to fix the problem.

The Background

I bought my Amazon Fire HD 10 (11th generation, 2021) tablet for $114.26 on eBay in November 2022, new and sealed. My goal was simple: to use it as a fully Kiosk browser to display my smart home dashboard. However, the device started powering itself off unexpectedly, often twice a day. After several months of diagnostics with Claude, an AI model, I discovered that several Amazon services held REBOOT and SHUTDOWN permissions, but I couldn't disable them due to software protection.

The AI Approach

Kimi K3 to the Rescue

On August 13th, I decided to take a deeper dive with Kimi K3, an AI model from Moonshot AI. My goal was clear: find a method to root the tablet and regain full control of the device. Kimi K3 analyzed my request and, after verifying the legality of rooting, began exploring the possibilities.

The Other AI Models

  1. GLM-5.2: This model identified the fatal bugs that were hindering my progress, costing $21.90.
  2. GLM-5.3: With an $80 subscription, this model finished the job in one day.
  3. Claude: Although it helped diagnose the issue, its security measures eventually cut me off.

The Results

Thanks to these four AI models, I was able to root my tablet, disable the problematic services, and finally use my device as I intended. What initially was a frustration turned into an enriching experience where I learned a lot about the capabilities of current AI models.

Conclusion

Spending $266 to solve a problem with a $114 tablet might seem excessive. Yet, beyond the simple technical resolution, this adventure allowed me to understand the enormous potential of AI models to customize and secure our devices.
