Introduction

Managing policies on Linux desktops can often be a headache, especially with the multitude of applications and possible configurations. Fortunately, Bor v0.8.0, an open-source solution, simplifies this complex task. With the addition of new policy types for Thunderbird, Microsoft Edge for Business, and Firewalld zones, Bor offers centralized and efficient policy management on Linux desktops.

New Policy Types

Thunderbird

With Bor v0.8.0, Mozilla Thunderbird can now be centrally managed on enrolled desktops. The Bor agent writes the expected policies.json file for Thunderbird, merging it from all bound policies. This feature includes detection and enforcement of Flatpak installations alongside RPM/DEB installations. The managed file is protected by a tamper-watcher mechanism, ensuring any external edits are immediately restored.

Microsoft Edge for Business

For businesses using Microsoft Edge on Linux, Bor simplifies policy management by writing the bor_managed.json file into each Edge managed-policy directory. Bor’s web UI provides a tree-based editor with an Edge policy catalog, JSON validation, and a setting preview before enabling.

Firewalld Zones

Managing Firewalld zones is now seamless with Bor. The agent writes zone XML files to /etc/firewalld/zones/, validates them with firewall-cmd --check-config, and reloads Firewalld. Zone files, like all other managed files, are tamper-protected.

User Interface Enhancements

Bor’s user interface has been fully modernized with PatternFly 6, offering an improved user experience. Key highlights include:

  • URL Routing: Every page has a real URL with working browser back/forward and deep links.
  • Full-Page Policy Editor: The policy editor is now a routed page (/policies/:id/edit) instead of nested modals.

Security and RBAC

Bor v0.8.0 enhances security with a dedicated security hardening pass and finer-grained role-based access control (RBAC). Polkit rules now support variable conditions, providing increased flexibility in managing authorization rules.

Conclusion

Bor v0.8.0 offers a robust and flexible solution for policy management on Linux desktops, significantly simplifying what was once a complex and time-consuming task. Whether you are a system administrator or a technical decision-maker, Bor can transform how you manage policies.
