A Digital Time Travel
In the relentless world of the web, where new trends often overshadow the old, rescuing decades-old GIFs might seem like a thankless, if not pointless, task. Yet, these tiny animated images, relics of a bygone era, hold within them a precious piece of Internet history.
The Origin of the Project
It all started when GlitchyZorua stumbled upon the Ibiblio Icon Browser, a collection of thousands of GIF icons curated in the 1990s by Gioacchino La Vecchia. GlitchyZorua's goal was to archive a copy of all these icons, a task that turned out to be more complex than initially anticipated.
Technical Challenges
The main hurdle in this mission was the use of server-side imagemaps. Unlike client-side imagemaps, where the coordinates and destinations are stored in the HTML code, server-side imagemaps ask the browser to send the clicked coordinates to the server, which then redirects the user based on these coordinates. This process made automation difficult, as there were no direct URLs to access the GIF files.
The Solution
To overcome this issue, a custom solution had to be developed. By exploring the site, it was discovered that the images were always laid out in an 8x8 grid, with each icon occupying a 72x89 pixel space. Using a script to simulate clicks on each intersection area, it was possible to access the images and download them.
A Successful Rescue
After several trials and adjustments, the project successfully extracted and archived 7,234 GIFs. This archive now serves as a valuable resource for digital art enthusiasts and web historians.
The Importance of Digital Preservation
This project is not just about nostalgia. Digital preservation plays a crucial role in safeguarding our cultural and technological heritage. With the rapid evolution of technology, important elements of our digital past are at risk of being lost forever.
Conclusion
Rescuing GIFs might seem trivial, but it is an endeavor that underscores the importance of preserving our digital history. If you're considering a similar project or want to discuss digital preservation, let's discuss your project in 15 minutes.
