Introduction

In a world where artificial intelligence (AI) is starting to play a crucial role in healthcare, it's only natural to wonder how it might transform medical diagnostics. I recently experimented with Claude Code using Opus 4.8 to get a second opinion on my MRI results. Here's what I discovered and what it might mean for the future of medicine.

The Context

For several weeks, I had been experiencing persistent pain in my right shoulder. Despite apparent improvement, I consulted an orthopedist who recommended an MRI. The diagnosis was complex: a partial tear at the apical insertion of my subscapularis tendon. The suggested treatments seemed rushed, prompting me to explore a digital alternative to validate this diagnosis.

Using Claude Code and Opus 4.8

I decided to leverage the capabilities of Claude Code with Opus 4.8 to analyze the MRI. The MRI DICOM package contained several hundred files, totaling about 266 MB. Claude Code, integrating Opus 4.8, enabled a thorough analysis by installing necessary packages and executing the required code.

The Technical Approach

The setup involved several steps. First, I provided a simple instruction about the shoulder pain. Then, Claude Code developed a detailed analysis plan. After about an hour, it produced a report with findings that questioned the initial diagnosis.

The Results

Claude Code identified two concerning points:

  1. Use of shockwave therapy, which is not recommended without calcification, which was my case.
  2. Injection of Traumeel, a homeopathic medicine without a recognized therapeutic indication.

These findings raised doubts about the appropriateness of the clinic's proposed treatments.

The Impact and Future Prospects

The use of AI for medical analysis could revolutionize how diagnoses are verified. While Claude Code does not replace a professional medical diagnosis, it offers a valuable cross-checking tool. According to a Grand View Research report, the AI healthcare market is expected to reach USD 45.2 billion by 2026, with a compound annual growth rate of 44.9%. This shows a growing interest in solutions like Claude Code.

Conclusion

My experience with Claude Code and Opus 4.8 proved to me that AI could become a powerful ally in the medical field. By challenging traditional diagnostics, it drives greater accuracy and better decision-making. If you're considering exploring AI for your project, let's discuss your project in 15 minutes.
