A Dive into Meta's World
Working at Meta isn't just about coding virtual worlds. It's also about baking pastries for those who do. Imagine yourself in an industrial kitchen, a few meters from the servers supporting the metaverse dream. This was my daily life as a pastry chef at one of Meta's data centers.
The Metaverse: A Corporate Vision
The metaverse wasn't just a futuristic concept but a very concrete vision at Meta. With billions in investments, Meta aimed to create a total digital universe. Although the project was often mocked for its legless avatars, the idea persists and permeates our digital lives.
Behind the Scenes of a Data Center
The Meta campus, although ultra-modern, felt like a luxury prison. Cement buildings, security gates, and omnipresent fluorescent lighting. Inside was equally sterile: break rooms with foosball, game consoles, and unlimited snacks. It was a microcosm of the future we were building.
A Strange Microcosm
The "kombucha club" Faceboosh, with its branded mugs, is a perfect example. Here, eccentricity met innovation, forming a unique corporate culture.
The Apparent Failure of the Metaverse
Many consider the metaverse to have failed. However, the idea hasn’t vanished; it’s simply integrated everywhere. Virtual and augmented reality technologies continue to grow, with a market value expected to reach $209 billion by 2025.
The Integration of AI
Artificial intelligence plays a crucial role in this evolution. It enables the creation of more immersive and interactive environments. Companies like NVIDIA are investing heavily in AI to enhance virtual reality experiences.
Reflections on the Future
Working at Meta allowed me to see up close the challenges and ambitions of tech giants. The metaverse, whether as a video game or a virtual workspace, is redefining our relationship with digital.
