The Beginning of an Adventure: How It All Started
Ollie Wagner joined Apple in 2008 as an intern on the Human Interface team. The emoji project began that same year under the leadership of another intern, Angela Guzman. "I continued the project after Angela," Ollie explains. "We were three designers working on this original set of emojis."
Design Challenges: Art and Technology
The main challenge for Ollie and his colleagues was to create emojis that were not only aesthetically pleasing but also universal. "We worked from a spreadsheet provided by SoftBank, with each line representing a glyph," Ollie recalls. "Our task was to expand this visual language while maintaining internal consistency and reflecting Apple's identity."
Creation Process: From Concept to Icon
The emoji creation process was intensive. "I spent entire days drawing these little emojis," Ollie recounts. "I based my work on photo references and worked in Photoshop, each icon hand-drawn with a combination of vectors."

Since their creation, emojis have had a significant impact on how we communicate. As of 2023, over 10 billion emojis are sent every day worldwide, according to a Statista study. Emojis transcend linguistic barriers and add an emotional dimension to our written messages.
