Introduction

The era of agentic AI has taken a new turn with the introduction of Claude Sonnet 5 by Anthropic. This model not only follows in the footsteps of its predecessors, but it also redefines the standards for performance and efficiency in tool usage and autonomous planning.

What is Claude Sonnet 5?

Claude Sonnet 5 is designed to be the most agentic model in the Sonnet series to date. It can plan, use tools like browsers and terminals, and operate autonomously at a level that, just a few months ago, required larger and more expensive models.

Performance and Improvements

Compared to its predecessor, Sonnet 4.6, Claude Sonnet 5 offers significant improvements in several key areas such as reasoning, tool usage, coding, and knowledge work. Evaluations show that Sonnet 5 approaches the performance of Opus 4.8 models, but at lower costs, making it particularly attractive for cost-conscious developers.

Safety assessments found that Sonnet 5 displays an overall lower rate of undesirable behaviors than Sonnet 4.6, making it generally safer to use in agentic contexts.

Availability and Pricing

As of today, Claude Sonnet 5 is available across all plans: it is the default model for Free and Pro plans, and is available to Max, Team, and Enterprise users. The model is also available on the Claude Platform with introductory pricing of $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens through August 31, 2026. After that, prices will rise to $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens.

Working with Claude Sonnet 5

Evaluations like BrowseComp for agentic search and OSWorld-Verified for computer usage show that Sonnet 5 strictly improves on Sonnet 4.6's performance and covers a much wider range of cost-performance options than Opus 4.8. At a medium effort level, Sonnet 5 offers substantially improved cost efficiency and can match Opus 4.8 on some tasks at higher effort levels.

Conclusion

Claude Sonnet 5 represents a significant advancement towards more accessible and competent AI. For developers and entrepreneurs looking to integrate advanced agentic AI solutions without compromising the budget, Sonnet 5 is an essential option.
