Amazon's Major Move into Missouri

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced a significant investment in Missouri, with the creation of a data center campus in Montgomery County. This multibillion-dollar project is expected to create over 400 full-time jobs and thousands of construction opportunities during the development phase. The positions include electricians, HVAC technicians, network specialists, operations managers, and other technical roles offering competitive pay and benefits.

Boosting the Local Economy and Innovation

The new AWS campus will support cloud computing and AI workloads, services used daily by millions in fields like remote work, streaming, healthcare, and finance. By strengthening its presence in Missouri, where Amazon already employs over 10,000 people, the company also supports another 10,000 jobs in related industries.

Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe praised this investment as a significant boost for the region's infrastructure, tax revenues, and economic growth.

A Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Approach

In line with its commitment to sustainability, Amazon has reached agreements with Ameren Missouri to ensure that the costs associated with the new campus are not passed on to other ratepayers. The company has invested in a 138 MW carbon-free energy project in the state, generating enough power for more than 28,000 homes.

Regarding water management, the facilities will emphasize efficiency with features including:

  • Free-air cooling for about 90% of the time
  • Rainwater harvesting to cover about 20% of annual water needs
  • On-site recycling that reuses water up to six times

Amazon projects the site will use less than 0.1% of the local aquifer's annual recharge volume from rainfall.

Community and Economic Impact

The investment is projected to generate hundreds of millions of dollars in new tax revenue for Montgomery County and the region over time, significantly more than the previous land use. Amazon is also committing over $7 million in direct community contributions, including:

  • $3 million for emergency dispatch services and public safety infrastructure
  • Over $1 million for a new community gathering space at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds

Amazon plans to donate the completed water infrastructure to the local public water supply district at no cost.

This development positions Montgomery County as an emerging data center hub in the Midwest, alongside other recent large-scale tech projects.

Conclusion

Amazon's initiative in Missouri is a striking example of how major tech companies can boost local economies while adhering to sustainability commitments. With jobs, infrastructure, and community support at stake, Amazon provides a development model for other regions.
