Europe just sent a very clear message to Elon Musk—and, by extension, to anyone shipping generative AI with a “move fast” mindset.
On 3 February 2026, X’s Paris offices were raided by the Paris prosecutor’s cybercrime unit, with support from Europol and the French Gendarmerie (The Verge, 03/02/2026). At the same time, the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) opened a fresh probe into Grok (xAI), focusing on its “potential to produce harmful sexualised image and video content” (BBC; The Guardian, 03/02/2026).
If you’re a founder, freelancer, CTO, or ops lead, it’s tempting to dismiss this as “big-tech drama” or “politics.” That’s the wrong takeaway.
The real signal is this: regulators are now treating generative AI as a high-risk attack surface—legal, reputational, and operational—similar to security or GDPR compliance. And that changes how you should build products and internal automations.
What happened (the facts): France + UK, same direction
France: raid + expanded criminal investigation
According to the BBC (and corroborated by multiple outlets), the Paris prosecutor is investigating suspected offences including:
- Unlawful/fraudulent data extraction
- Complicity in possession and/or organised distribution of child sexual abuse material (CSAM)
- Infringement of image rights through sexual deepfakes
The French investigation started in January 2025, initially focused on content recommended by X’s algorithm, and was expanded in summer 2025 to include aspects related to Grok, Musk’s AI chatbot (Business Insider, 02/2026; BBC).
French prosecutors also said Elon Musk and former X CEO Linda Yaccarino were summoned for voluntary hearings on 20 April 2026 (AOL, 02/2026).
UK: ICO targets Grok and sexual deepfakes
