You’re being sold age verification as something obvious and harmless:
“If you care about kids, you must verify everyone’s age.”
In practice, it often means:
“Give us your ID, your selfie, your face, your IP… and trust us.”
Welcome to the age verification trap: a system that claims to protect minors but ends up weakening privacy and security for everyone.
In this article, we’ll break down the problem, look at real-world cases and numbers, and—most importantly—see what this means for you as a founder, SaaS operator, indie hacker, or SME owner.
The official story: “It’s for the children”
Governments around the world are pushing in the same direction:
- restrict minors’ access to social media
- block pornography for under-18s
- reduce youth exposure to certain types of content
On paper, it’s hard to argue with that. Nobody is campaigning to show hardcore content to kids.
The problem is the solution they’ve picked: large-scale, mandatory age verification.
In practice, that means that to access certain services or content, you’re asked for:
- a government ID (passport, ID card, driver’s license)
- a selfie or video for biometric analysis
- sometimes even payment data (credit card, etc.)
And all of that ends up in a database somewhere.
Why age verification wrecks data protection
The political promise is: “We’re just checking your age, nothing more.” The technical and business reality is very different.
1. It violates data minimization by design
GDPR and every serious privacy framework say the same thing:
You should only collect the data that is strictly necessary.
To check whether someone is over 18, you only need one piece of information: is this person an adult, yes or no?
What is actually collected in most systems:
- full name
- full date of birth
- document number
- ID photo
- sometimes address, sex, nationality
- facial biometrics
In other words: a full identity record, when all you needed was a single bit (0 = minor, 1 = adult).
2. It creates ultra-sensitive, ultra-attractive data silos
Waydell D. Carvalho (IEEE Spectrum) puts it bluntly:
Any age-verification system eventually creates a highly attractive database for attackers.
Why? Because to prove they’re “compliant”, age-verification providers and platforms need to:
- keep evidence of verifications
- prove to regulators that checks were actually performed
- archive logs, sometimes images, sometimes documents
The result: you end up with data silos containing:
- scans of government IDs
- selfies and biometric templates
- metadata (IP, device, approximate location)
You’ve just created a treasure trove for hackers, organized crime, authoritarian regimes… and potentially for shady competitors.
3. You’re betting against the breach… and you will lose
We live in a world where:
- hospitals are hit by ransomware
- telcos get their entire customer databases dumped
- even governments get hacked
Do you really believe that companies whose core business is not security will store millions of identity documents and never get breached?
Age-verification data is not “just more data”. It’s identity data. Once it’s stolen, you can’t “reset” it like a password.
Real-world cases: when age verification backfires
Look at what’s already happening, and we’re still early in this trend.
Reddit: too little, too late… and everyone loses
In the UK, Reddit was fined around £14.5 million (≈ $20 million) for not protecting under-13s adequately.
Initially, they relied on self-declared age (you tick a box “I’m over 13”). Regulators said: not enough.
So, like every large platform, Reddit is now pushed toward heavier verification solutions. Translation:
- more data collection
- more documents
- more biometrics
Kids are not necessarily better protected. But adults are now much more exposed.
Discord & Persona: community backlash in real time
Discord piloted Persona (an identity verification service) to gate certain sensitive content.
The flow:
- you upload a photo of your government ID
- plus a selfie to match it
Problem: Persona is tied to government surveillance use cases. The result:
- huge backlash from users, especially LGBTQ+ communities
- fear of being tracked and profiled
- Discord had to pause the rollout
The pattern is clear: the moment you touch real identity, you touch extremely sensitive territory (sexual orientation, politics, health, etc.).
Roblox: verified kids’ accounts as a new criminal asset
Roblox, heavily used by children, now requires an ID or selfie to access 18+ areas.
Side effect:
- “verified” accounts become more valuable
- criminals start buying / stealing these accounts
- some use those accounts to target children
You tried to put a gate at the entrance; you created a black market.
Collateral damage: discrimination, exclusion, end of anonymity
Beyond pure security, mass age verification has other toxic side effects.
1. Algorithmic systems are wrong—especially for minorities
Recent vision-language models are better than old-school age-estimation networks, but they’re still far from perfect.
Audits show that:
- non-white people are more likely to be misclassified
- trans and gender-nonconforming people are penalized
- people without official documents are effectively excluded
You’re building a two-tier Internet:
- those with the right papers and the right face
- everyone else, locked out
2. You’re killing anonymity—and with it, a lot of freedom
The EFF has been hammering this for years: online anonymity is not a teenage quirk. It’s a lifeline for:
- political dissidents
- whistleblowers
- victims of abuse
- LGBTQ+ people in hostile environments
If every access to “sensitive” sites (politics, sexuality, mental health…) requires age verification tied to real identity, you’ve built a dream tool for:
- authoritarian governments
- companies obsessed with hyper-profiling
We’re no longer in the realm of child protection; we’re in the realm of normalized surveillance.
Why this is a business nightmare for founders
As a founder, you should see this as a strategic risk, not a minor compliance detail.
1. Compliance costs explode
Implementing serious age verification means:
- integrating a third-party provider (or building your own system)
- doing DPIAs and privacy impact assessments
- documenting data flows
- handling appeals, data deletion, and access requests
If you’re a small SaaS, indie hacker, or SME, this is a ball and chain that can cost more than your MRR.
And if you mess up? Fines, reputational damage, loss of user trust.
2. User friction = conversion drop
Ask yourself: how many users will bounce the moment you say:
“Upload your government ID + a video selfie to continue.”
For porn or gambling, some will go through. For a B2B SaaS, a niche social app, a community forum… many will simply close the tab.
Every extra step in your funnel is a leak. Heavy age verification is a hole in the bucket.
3. You’re taking bullets meant for Big Tech
The giants (Meta, Google, TikTok) can afford:
- large legal teams
- specialized providers
- lobbyists to shape the law
You can’t.
The result:
- age-verification laws create a competitive moat for incumbents
- smaller players are forced to choose between:
Once again, bureaucracy doesn’t hurt the giants. It kills the small ones.
Pragmatic playbook: how to limit the damage
You won’t rewrite global regulation on your own. But you can be smart about how you implement (or resist) age verification.
1. Always aim for the “minimum necessary”
If you must implement age verification:
- avoid full ID scans if a proof-of-majority token is enough
- prefer systems that return a simple “18+” token instead of full birthdate
- reject vendors that keep raw documents without clear limits
Always ask your provider:
- Exactly what data do you store?
- For how long?
- Do you reuse it to train models?
- Where is the data hosted (country, cloud)?
- How can I prove verification without storing documents?
2. Aggressively scope where age checks apply
Don’t slap age checks everywhere “just in case.”
- Identify the genuinely risky areas (adult content, high-risk features)
- Apply verification only there
- Keep the rest of your product accessible with minimal friction
This is good for privacy and for your conversion rates.
3. Use AI to reduce the compliance tax
You can use AI to make privacy and compliance less painful:
- auto-generate and maintain your data-processing records and DPIAs
- automatically analyze logs for abuse patterns
- handle data access/deletion requests faster and more consistently
The point is not to turn you into a lawyer. It’s to shrink the operational cost of doing the right thing.
4. Be radically transparent with your users
Trust is your most valuable asset.
Explain clearly:
- why you’re implementing age verification
- what data you actually collect
- what you do not do with that data
- how users can delete it
The less you hide, the easier it is to defend your choices without looking like just another data vacuum.
The conversation we should actually be having
The public debate is framed badly:
- camp 1: “Protect the kids at all costs.”
- camp 2: “No rules, total freedom.”
Reality is more nuanced. We can:
- protect children intelligently, by acting on platform design, recommender systems, and parental education
- without turning the Internet into a giant identity-collection machine
As a builder, you have a role here:
- refuse solutions that are grossly invasive
- experiment with lighter, privacy-preserving approaches
- document and share what works
Tech itself is not the problem. The problem is regulatory laziness: instead of thinking hard, lawmakers just bolt KYC onto everything.
