The Politicization of AI Companies: A Risk for Adoption

When OpenAI or xAI executives engage politically, the entire sector pays the price. Analysis.

What can companies do?

Geographic diversification emerges as strategy. European and Asian companies can position themselves on a political neutrality niche, away from American culture wars.

Users facing the dilemma

Boycotting ChatGPT is easy to say, hard to do. The tool is integrated into thousands of workflows. Alternatives exist but require migration effort. Indignation often collides with practicality.

Yet, switching movements exist. Claude's (Anthropic) success, positioned as more cautious on ethics, shows that a market segment values these criteria. Value differentiation becomes a commercial argument.

Toward regulating tech lobbying?

In Europe, the AI Act imposes transparency obligations. But executive lobbying largely remains out of scope. In the United States, Citizens United leaves the field open to tech billionaires.

Regulatory evolution isn't impossible. The tobacco precedent shows that industries perceived as harmful eventually see their political influence regulated. AI isn't there yet, but signals are accumulating.
